Seven Murders in Seventeen Days: Rising Concern in Narsingdi

The district of Narsingdi has witnessed an alarming surge in violent crime, with seven murders reported in just seventeen days. The relentless succession of killings and attempted homicides has left local residents gripped by fear and uncertainty. Each incident seems to trigger another, compounding the anxiety felt across the community. Bodies of unidentified individuals have been discovered in various locations, though technological assistance has helped identify many victims posthumously.

In a significant development, the firearms used in the shooting of Sharif Osman Hadi were recovered on the night of Tuesday, 16 December, from Narsingdi. According to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), authorities seized two foreign pistols, two magazines, a toy pistol, and 41 rounds of ammunition. The discovery has sparked pressing questions among the public: is Narsingdi becoming an underground arms market? From where are such weapons infiltrating the district?

Residents report that armed displays, robberies, assaults, and public shootings have become distressingly routine. Many feel as though their very lives are at the mercy of criminal elements. With national elections approaching, there is heightened concern that violent incidents may escalate further. Despite the active involvement of law enforcement, an air of pervasive dread continues to affect the populace.

Concerned citizens attribute these killings primarily to a combination of political and business rivalries, personal vendettas, robbery, and disputes over territory. While politically motivated murders were more common in the past, current incidents often arise from theft, drug and arms trafficking, land conflicts, and minor disputes related to local businesses, internet services, or sand trading.

Over the past seventeen days, seven bodies were recovered across six sub-districts of Narsingdi. The details are outlined below:

Local social worker Rashedul Hasan commented, “These constant incidents instil fear in us whenever we step outside. Families live in terror, and the authorities must increase vigilance. With elections looming, preventing further violence is crucial.” Similarly, Holadhar Das, General Secretary of Sujon Narsingdi, noted, “The law enforcement agencies must adopt a stricter stance, but public awareness is equally important. Only then can crime be effectively curbed.”

Police Superintendent Md. Abdullah-al-Faruk reassured the public that all murder cases are under investigation and that suspects are being apprehended. He added that the district’s law and order situation is currently stable and improving, though continued vigilance remains essential.
