Several Areas to Face Ten-Hour Power Outage on Thursday

Residents of several key neighbourhoods in Sylhet city are set to experience a prolonged electricity outage on Thursday, 18 December, as the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) carries out scheduled maintenance and infrastructure upgrades.

According to an official press release issued on Wednesday, 17 December, electricity supply will remain suspended for a continuous ten-hour period, from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm, in areas served by the 11 kV Dhopagul feeder. The announcement was made by the Executive Engineer of BPDB, Sales and Distribution Division–1, Sylhet.

The power cut has been planned to facilitate a range of essential technical works, including transformer repair and preservation, overhaul of transmission lines, and trimming of tree branches that pose risks to overhead electrical infrastructure. BPDB officials have stated that these measures are necessary to improve system reliability, ensure public safety, and reduce the likelihood of unexpected outages in the future.

While the interruption is temporary, authorities acknowledge that it may cause inconvenience to residents, businesses, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities. The Executive Engineer has expressed regret for the disruption and urged consumers to make advance arrangements, particularly those who rely on electricity for essential services or commercial activities.

BPDB further assured that all efforts will be made to complete the work within the stipulated time. If operations proceed as planned, power supply will be restored immediately after maintenance concludes. However, officials cautioned that unforeseen technical challenges or adverse weather conditions could potentially extend the outage.

Residents are advised to switch off sensitive electrical appliances before the shutdown and to take necessary precautions to avoid damage when power is restored.
