Severe Storm Warnings Issued for 12 Districts Including Dhaka

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has issued warnings of strong winds, thunderstorms, and heavy rainfall affecting Dhaka and 11 additional districts on Thursday, 19 March. Residents, local authorities, and riverine operators have been advised to exercise caution as severe weather conditions are expected during the early morning hours.

According to a special advisory released on Wednesday night (18 March) for inland river ports, gusts of wind reaching 60–80 km/h are expected to sweep across the region from the west and northwest between 10:00 pm Wednesday and 9:00 am Thursday. The alert also indicates the likelihood of thunderstorms accompanied by intense rainfall, which may disrupt daily life, pose hazards to property, and create risks for river navigation.

The districts under alert include Dhaka, Jessore, Kushtia, Tangail, Mymensingh, Faridpur, Madaripur, Barishal, Patuakhali, Comilla, Noakhali, and Sylhet. The BMD has instructed river ports in these areas to hoist ‘Navy Warning Signal No. 2’, signalling heightened vigilance for all riverine activities. Authorities and vessel operators have been urged to secure boats, cargo, and movable assets and to ensure safe navigation during the alert period.

This advisory coincides with the Chaitra season, when sudden squalls, locally known as Kalboishakhi, frequently develop. These storms can rapidly intensify, making river and outdoor conditions hazardous. The BMD has emphasised that extra precautions should be taken along river routes, and that maritime travel should only continue if safety protocols are strictly observed.
