Today, 20 January, marks a significant occasion in Bangladesh—Shaheed Asad Day. On this day in 1969, during a massive public uprising in Dhaka, student leader Mohammad Asaduzzaman, widely known as “Asad,” was fatally shot by police in front of the Dhaka Medical College campus. His selfless sacrifice is remembered as a defining moment in Bangladesh’s struggle for democracy, symbolising courage, determination, and unwavering commitment among the nation’s youth.
Asad’s martyrdom did not merely intensify the ongoing movement; it also inspired and guided subsequent democratic struggles across the country. His memory continues to motivate generations of Bangladeshis to uphold justice, safeguard freedom, and exercise civic responsibility.
In recognition of this day, Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus, chief adviser to the caretaker government, issued a statement emphasising the enduring significance of Asad’s sacrifice:
“The courage and commitment shown by Shaheed Asad during the 1969 uprising will forever remain etched in the hearts of Bangladesh’s democracy-loving and freedom-committed people. His example teaches the new generation the values of responsibility towards the nation and steadfastness in pursuing truth.”
The commemorations began at 8 a.m. in front of the main gate of Dhaka Medical College, where participants paid floral tributes, recited patriotic poems, sang songs of devotion, and engaged in discussion sessions. The event was organised by the Democratic Cultural Alliance and saw active participation from political parties, student organisations, professional associations, and cultural groups.
