Shanaka emerges as the priciest foreign player in BPL

The 12th edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is scheduled to commence on 26 December, assuming preparations proceed without disruption. The player auction, held on Sunday, marked a significant return to the auction system for team formation, following nearly a decade of draft-based selections since the league’s inaugural season in 2012.

Local talent drew considerable attention, particularly Naim Sheikh, who has struggled to maintain a regular place in the national team. Sheikh, the top run-scorer in last season’s BPL, was acquired by Chattogram Royals for BDT 1.10 crore, a remarkable leap from his base price of BDT 50 lakh. Team management expressed optimism that Sheikh’s experience and recent form would bolster their batting line-up.

Foreign recruits also commanded high prices, with former Sri Lankan captain and all-rounder Dasun Shanaka securing the highest bid among overseas players. Dhaka Capitals signed Shanaka for USD 55,000, equivalent to BDT 67 lakh, highlighting his continuing reputation as a versatile performer capable of influencing matches with both bat and ball.

Other notable foreign signings included Sri Lankan internationals Angelo Mathews and Niroshan Dickwella. Both were acquired at their base price of USD 35,000, by Chattogram Royals and Sylhet Titans respectively, reinforcing these teams’ focus on experience and tactical acumen.

The auction also spotlighted uncapped local talent. Habibur Rahman Sohan, who impressed for Bangladesh ‘A’ in the Rising Stars Asia Cup, was signed by Noakhali Express for BDT 50 lakh, nearly three times his base price of BDT 18 lakh. His dynamic performances at the junior level have earned him a reputation as a promising all-rounder, and he is expected to make an immediate impact in the tournament.

This season, six franchises will compete: Dhaka Capitals, Rangpur Riders, Rajshahi Warriors, Noakhali Express, Sylhet Titans, and Chattogram Royals. Each team has sought a balance of seasoned internationals, proven local stars, and emerging talent to contend for the championship in what promises to be a highly competitive BPL season.
