With the T20 World Cup scheduled for next year, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has unveiled its 25-member preliminary squad, sparking intrigue among fans and analysts alike. The team sees the return of Dasun Shanaka as captain, replacing Charith Asalanka, who has been omitted from leadership duties.
This move comes in the wake of a disappointing 2024 T20 World Cup campaign, after which former captain Wanindu Hasaranga stepped down. Asalanka had assumed the captaincy in July of last year but struggled to inspire consistent performances. Under his leadership, Sri Lanka played 25 matches, winning 11 and losing 12, a record considered underwhelming for a team of their calibre.
Sri Lanka’s struggles extended beyond captaincy. In recent bilateral series against India, New Zealand, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, the team suffered multiple defeats. Additionally, they were unable to reach the final of the last Asia Cup, further highlighting the need for a strategic overhaul ahead of the World Cup.
Asalanka’s batting form also raised concerns. In 23 innings across 25 matches, he scored 368 runs at an average of 19.36 and a strike rate of 135, figures deemed insufficient for World Cup contention. Consequently, SLC has opted not to include him in the World Cup leadership plan, prioritising experience and stability.
Shanaka, who previously led Sri Lanka in 53 matches, will bring his considerable experience back to the forefront. During his earlier captaincy tenure, Sri Lanka won 24 matches and lost 27. His familiarity with high-pressure tournaments and ability to motivate a team will be crucial as the island nation looks to rebound on the global stage.
