Dhaka Metropolitan Detective (DB) Police have filed a charge sheet against seven drug dealers in the murder case of Dhaka University student Shahriar Alam Samy. According to the investigation, Samy, a Chhatra Dal leader, was deliberately killed for obstructing marijuana sales at Suhrawardy Udyan.
The charge sheet states that the accused had long been selling marijuana in the park. Mehedi Hasan led the network, assisted by Md. Rabbi alias Kabutor Rabbi, Md. Ripon alias Akash, Nahid Hasan Papel, Md. Hriday Islam, Md. Harun Or Rashid Sohag alias Lomba Sohag, and Md. Robin.
DB Police Inspector Akhtar Morshed said Samy and his friends often spent time in the park and raised awareness to stop drug sales, creating enmity with the accused. On the night of May 13, Samy was fatally stabbed in retaliation. Mehedi had armed his associates with a switchgear knife and an electric taser gun for the attack.
On the night of the incident, Samy went to the park with friends on a motorcycle. Near Muktomanch, he confronted Kabutor Rabbi, who was armed, and attempted to stop him. A scuffle ensued, during which Mehedi, Ripon, Papel, Sohag, Hriday, and Robin attacked. Samy was stabbed in the arm and later declared dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The murder case was filed by Samy’s elder brother, Shariful Islam, at Shahbagh Police Station. Following investigation, DB Police submitted a charge sheet against the seven accused: Mehedi Hasan, Md. Rabbi alias Kabutor Rabbi, Md. Ripon alias Akash, Nahid Hasan Papel, Md. Hriday Islam, Md. Harun Or Rashid Sohag alias Lomba Sohag, and Md. Robin.
Others—Sujon Sarkar, Tamim Hawlader, Samrat Mallick, and Palash Sardar—were granted exemption as the allegations against them were not proven. They were present at the scene but were not directly involved in the murder and were injured while attempting to protect Samy.
Investigation confirms that the murder was premeditated and motivated by interference with drug sales. The seven accused face charges under five sections of the Penal Code, which have been initially substantiated.
