The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has expelled six local leaders from Sarail upazila in Brahmanbaria after they were found to have actively participated in the election campaign of independent candidate Rumin Farhana in the Brahmanbaria–2 constituency. The decision underscores the party’s firm stance on internal discipline amid the 13th National Parliamentary Election.
The expulsions were formally announced on Tuesday afternoon through a press release signed by ABM Salauddin, office secretary of the Sarail upazila BNP. According to the statement, the action was taken for violating party discipline and defying a clear directive from BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, who had instructed party members not to support any rebel or independent candidates contesting against official party positions.
The press release stated that the six leaders were involved in electioneering activities in favour of Rumin Farhana, who is contesting the Brahmanbaria–2 seat as an independent candidate. Their actions were deemed to be in direct contravention of party instructions and a serious breach of organisational discipline. As a result, they have been expelled from their primary membership as well as from all party posts with immediate effect.
The decision was taken on the instructions of Anisul Islam Thakur, vice-president of the district BNP and president of the Sarail upazila unit, along with Nuruzzaman Laskar, district BNP’s law affairs secretary and general secretary of the Sarail upazila BNP.
Those expelled include senior office bearers of the Shahbazpur Union BNP as well as a ward-level leader. Party and local sources confirmed that the six individuals had been visibly active in Rumin Farhana’s campaign from the outset. Their involvement went beyond informal support and included formal roles in her nomination process.
According to party insiders, Jewel Ali acted as the proposer of Rumin Farhana’s nomination papers, while Junaid Khan served as the supporter. Nur Uddin was reportedly listed as a witness. These actions, party leaders said, left no room for ambiguity regarding their political alignment during the election.
Nuruzzaman Laskar, general secretary of the Sarail upazila BNP, told journalists that the expulsions were necessary to uphold party discipline. He said the BNP would not tolerate any activities that undermine party unity or contradict central directives, particularly during a national election.

BNP leaders have indicated that similar disciplinary measures may follow if further violations are detected, signalling a zero-tolerance approach to internal dissent during the ongoing electoral process.
