Six Detained Over Road Brick Theft in Sylhet

Authorities in Sylhet’s Zakiganj Upazila have detained six individuals, including a local youth leader, following allegations that they removed bricks from a government road development project. The arrests came after a coordinated operation in the Munshi Bazar area of Kaskanakpur Union on Thursday, 5 March, aimed at recovering the stolen construction materials and preventing further misuse.

Allegations and Arrests

Among those detained is Mahfuzul Islam Chowdhury, the assistant secretary of the Upazila chapter of the Jubo Jamat. Local sources indicate that the incident immediately sparked significant public debate and criticism, especially after it was revealed that bricks from a government-funded road were being removed illegally. Social media chatter further amplified concerns, and Chowdhury’s online posts following the incident reportedly drew additional scrutiny.

The operation, which spanned from early morning until evening, recovered several hundred thousand bricks believed to have been taken illicitly from the site. Six individuals were taken into custody for questioning, and authorities confirmed that further legal action is in progress.

Background of the Road Project

The road in question extends approximately 2.5 kilometres, linking Munshi Bazar Madrasa to the North Iyer BGB Camp. Constructed in 2021, it was built using nearly one million bricks arranged in a herringbone bond pattern. Presently, the Bangladesh Water Development Board is overseeing renovation work on the Surma River embankment in the area.

As part of the preparatory measures, the Upazila administration had instructed that the existing road bricks be carefully removed and stored on the madrasa grounds for reuse during the embankment work. However, local complaints allege that, far beyond the authorised quantity, approximately 1.5 million bricks were removed under cover of darkness.

On 4 March, Abu Yusuf Mohammed, a local resident, submitted a formal written complaint to the Upazila Executive Officer. The allegations prompted immediate administrative action, leading to a targeted recovery operation the following day.

Official Statement

Abdur Razzak, Officer-in-Charge of Zakiganj Police Station, confirmed the arrests:

“Six individuals have been detained, including Mahfuzul Islam Chowdhury. Several hundred thousand bricks were recovered during the operation. Legal proceedings are currently underway against the accused.”

Authorities have described the operation as a key measure to safeguard government infrastructure, emphasising the importance of accountability in ongoing public works.

Community Impact and Debate

The case has reignited discussions regarding the protection of government development materials. Local residents, civic leaders, and administrative officials have urged stricter oversight to prevent the misuse or theft of construction resources. Experts stress that such incidents not only delay public projects but also undermine transparency and trust in rural development initiatives.
