Slot: PSG Exit Boosted Title Push

Arne Slot has suggested that Liverpool’s early exit from the Champions League last season may have played a decisive role in their Premier League triumph, while warning that marked improvement at both ends of the pitch is essential if his side are to win silverware this campaign.

The Liverpool head coach has come under renewed scrutiny after his team’s 13-match unbeaten run ended with a disappointing defeat at Bournemouth on Saturday. That result left the defending champions languishing in sixth place, a position that has amplified criticism despite encouraging performances in Europe.

Liverpool’s continental form stands in sharp contrast to their domestic inconsistency. A win against Qarabag at Anfield on Wednesday would secure qualification for the Champions League last 16. However, Slot’s defensive options will be stretched, with Ibrahima Konaté absent following the death of his father and Joe Gomez sidelined through injury.

When asked whether a larger squad might be required to cope with the demands of competing on multiple fronts, Slot delivered an unexpected assessment. He argued that the lighter schedule following Liverpool’s Champions League elimination by Paris Saint-Germain last March ultimately worked in their favour. The Reds were knocked out on penalties by the eventual winners while holding a commanding 15-point lead in the league, with nine matches remaining.

“This might not be a popular opinion,” Slot said, “but maybe the reason we won the league last season was because Paris Saint-Germain beat us in the last 16. After that, we always had a full week to prepare for our next league game. Maybe that helped us.” He added that while every manager appreciates the value of a deep squad, fewer fixtures can sometimes allow teams to maintain peak performance levels.

This season, Liverpool’s struggles following midweek European commitments appear to support Slot’s argument. The club have lost four away league matches immediately after Champions League games, with injuries further stretching already limited resources. Defensive frailties and a lack of clinical finishing were again evident at Bournemouth.

Slot admitted that progress is non-negotiable if Liverpool are to salvage their season. “At a club like this, it’s impossible to shut out the noise if you are not competing for the league,” he said. “Between the boxes, we are a very good team. But when we create chances, we have to be more clinical. And defensively, opponents don’t need many visits to our box to create chances or score. That’s a very bad cocktail.”

He stressed that marginal gains alone will not be enough. “If we improve in both boxes, I believe we can win something this season. If we improve in only one, it will be very difficult. And if we improve in neither, the noise will last all season.”
