Son Arrested for Mother’s Death in Dhamra

In a tragic incident in the southern Dhaka suburb of Dhamrai, police have arrested a man accused of killing his own mother by strangulation. The deceased, Jyotsna Rani Sarkar, aged 65, was reportedly attacked by her son Manik Mia at their family home in South Para on the evening of Sunday, 14th December.

Local residents reported witnessing the shocking aftermath, with Manik reportedly sitting beside his mother’s body, visibly distraught and in tears. Neighbours alerted the authorities immediately.

Police and local sources confirmed that Jyotsna Rani Sarkar lived in the vicinity of Dhamrai Government College, alongside her son. She was married to the late Bidu Sarkar. Upon receiving the distress call, officers arrived at the residence to recover her lifeless body and subsequently transported it to Dhamrai Police Station.

The following morning, Monday 15th December, her body was sent to Dhaka’s Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.

According to law enforcement officials, the mother and son frequently lived together, but disagreements and arguments had reportedly been a recurring issue. Family members alleged that Manik often mistreated his mother and neglected her medical needs. The fatal incident reportedly occurred during a heated argument, when Manik allegedly pressed his hands over his mother’s face and neck, causing fatal asphyxiation.

Neighbours rushed Jyotsna to Dhamrai Government Hospital, but she was pronounced dead by the attending medical staff. In response, her daughter, Lokkhi Rani Majumdar, filed a murder case with the Dhamrai Police Station, prompting a swift investigation.

Police sources confirmed that a raid was conducted later that night, resulting in Manik’s arrest from within his local area. During interrogation, he reportedly admitted to the act.

Speaking about the incident, Manik’s wife, Shefali Rani, said,

“I have a five-month-old child. With no one to care for the baby, I had left the child with my mother-in-law at her father’s house while I worked at Dhulivita Snotech Garments in Dhamrai. I am unaware of what transpired at the house.”

Dhamrai Police Inspector (Investigation), Md. Shahidul Islam Kalbela, added that the post-mortem has been completed and the accused has been formally presented before the court.
