Rajshahi, 1 February 2026 – A shocking case of domestic violence has emerged in Rajshahi, where a 42-year-old man has been accused of fatally stabbing his own mother over money for drugs. The incident occurred on Saturday night, 31 January, at approximately 9:30 pm in the Kharkhari area near the Krishi Bank intersection.
Locals apprehended the alleged perpetrator, identified as Suman, and handed him over to the police. The victim, Sohagi Begum, aged 55, was the widow of the late Azizul Islam, a resident of the same neighbourhood.
According to police and local sources, Suman had been struggling with a longstanding drug addiction. Preliminary reports suggest that an argument over money to buy drugs escalated into violence. Suman reportedly attacked his mother with a sharp weapon, inflicting fatal wounds to her chest and abdomen.
In a disturbing turn, after the attack, Suman dragged his mother’s body approximately 100 metres from their home onto the main road. He reportedly intended to seek medical help, attempting to flag down an auto-rickshaw. However, passersby, alarmed by the lifeless body on the street, confronted him. Fleeing back to his home, Suman locked the doors, only to be later apprehended by police from Chandrima Police Station, who arrived following a report from concerned locals.
Chandrima Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Monirul Islam, confirmed that the body was recovered and sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RAMEC) for autopsy. “During initial questioning, it was revealed that Suman suffers from drug addiction. Appropriate legal action will be taken against him,” he said.
Echoing the investigation, Gaziur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner (Spokesperson) of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, stated: “The suspect has been accused of murdering his own mother. Local residents intervened and handed him over to the police, who are now investigating the case further.”
This incident has sent shockwaves through the Kharkhari community, highlighting concerns about rising domestic violence linked to substance abuse. Neighbours described Sohagi Begum as a well-respected member of the locality, mourning her tragic death. Authorities have urged families to seek help for members struggling with addiction to prevent such tragedies in the future.
