Shariful’s ODI Selection Uncertain

Left-arm pacer Shariful Islam was not originally included in Bangladesh’s playing eleven for the first One Day International and only learned of his inclusion moments before the toss. The late change occurred when Mustafizur Rahman experienced discomfort in his right knee shortly before the match, forcing the team management to bring Shariful into the side as a replacement.

Shariful made immediate use of the opportunity. In the first ODI, he produced a highly economical and disciplined bowling performance, conceding just 27 runs in his 10 overs while taking two wickets. His spell was one of the most effective contributions from Bangladesh’s bowling unit in that match.

Despite this strong individual performance, Bangladesh were unable to secure victory. Chasing a target of 248 runs, they were bowled out for 221, resulting in a 26-run defeat. The result placed additional pressure on the team ahead of the second ODI, effectively turning it into a crucial match to stay competitive in the series.

Before the second ODI, Shariful Islam addressed the media in Mirpur as the team’s representative. He acknowledged that the team still had opportunities to recover in the series and expressed belief in their ability to respond. He said, “We still have two matches in hand. We have the ability to bounce back. In one match we may have made mistakes. They are a good team, and we are also a good team. We will bounce back in the next match.”

His participation in the second ODI remains uncertain. Mustafizur Rahman, who missed the first match due to fitness concerns, has now fully recovered, creating a selection decision for the team management. Shariful stated that team selection is not within his control and is entirely the responsibility of the coaching staff. He added that all 15 squad members remain prepared for selection and will play as required.

He said, “As professional cricketers, all 15 players in the squad stay ready to play. The decision is made by the coach. It is not in my hands. We will play according to the team selected.”

Reflecting on Bangladesh’s performance in the first ODI, Shariful did not place direct responsibility on the batting unit for the defeat. Bangladesh failed to successfully chase the target of 248, finishing all out for 221. However, he avoided assigning blame to any specific department.

He stated, “When we lose, both the players and the batters feel bad.”

He further suggested that improved bowling could have eased pressure on the batting side. According to him, better execution with the ball might have made the chase more manageable. He also expressed confidence that both departments would improve in the next match, emphasising the importance of collective performance.
