A man was killed in a tragic incident of alleged domestic conflict after being stabbed by his teenage son in the Demra North Bazar area of the capital. The incident occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. on Monday inside a rented residence, sparking shock and concern among local residents. The accused son, aged 16, fled the scene immediately after the incident and remains at large.
The deceased has been identified as 55-year-old Israfil, son of the late Abdul Halim Miah from Sutapara village in Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj. He had been living with his family in Demra North Bazar for an extended period and worked as a night security guard to support his household. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter.
Accounts from family members and witnesses present differing versions of the events leading to the fatal stabbing. According to the victim’s nephew, Israfil had long struggled with drug addiction and allegedly demanded money from his wife on the morning of the incident to purchase drugs. This reportedly led to an escalating argument between him and his younger son, Noor Hossain. The verbal dispute is said to have quickly turned into a physical altercation, during which Israfil sustained a stab wound.
However, the victim’s wife, Suriya Begum, provided a slightly different account, stating that the conflict began when her husband asked her for money early in the morning. The disagreement subsequently intensified between father and son, culminating in a struggle during which a knife struck Israfil in the chest. He died on the spot from his injuries.
Despite variations in eyewitness accounts, authorities believe the incident originated from ongoing domestic disputes within the family. Local residents also reported that tensions within the household had persisted for some time, although no one anticipated such a fatal outcome.
Police were informed by locals shortly after the incident. Officers from Demra Police Station arrived at the scene around 11:00 a.m., recovered the body, and later sent it to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination at approximately 1:45 p.m. Authorities confirmed that no formal complaint had been lodged by the family at the time of reporting.
Investigating officer Sub-Inspector Abdul Majid stated that it remains unclear whether the death was accidental or a deliberate act of homicide. He further confirmed that efforts are underway to apprehend the accused teenager, who fled following the incident.
