Son sentenced to death for murdering father in Tangail

A Sakhipur court in Tangail has sentenced a man to death for the murder of his father, alongside a fine of Tk 20,000. The verdict was delivered on Sunday, 30 November, in the afternoon by Hafizur Rahman, Judge of the Senior and District Sessions Court.

The convicted individual, Waheduzzaman, is the son of Abdus Samad, a resident of Dori Para West in Sakhipur. Court sources revealed that the tragic incident occurred on 25 February of the previous year, following a family dispute. Waheduzzaman attacked his father at their home with a ramda and other sharp weapons during the night and then fled the scene.

The victim’s brother, Abdur Rashid, subsequently filed a murder case at the Sakhipur Police Station, initiating the legal proceedings that would culminate in the recent verdict.

During the trial, all evidence and witness testimonies were thoroughly examined. Shafiqul Islam Ripon, Public Prosecutor of the Tangail court, stated that the judicial process was conducted meticulously, ensuring that justice was served based on concrete evidence. The verdict, he added, reinforces the rule of law in addressing violent crimes within the community.

The case has drawn attention to issues of family disputes escalating into violent crime, as well as the effectiveness of the legal system in holding perpetrators accountable. Legal experts note that the sentence serves both as a punitive measure and a deterrent against similar offences, highlighting the court’s commitment to upholding justice in serious criminal cases.

Local authorities emphasised the importance of lawful resolution of domestic conflicts and urged families to seek mediation or legal assistance rather than resorting to violence. The community of Sakhipur has responded with a mixture of shock and relief that justice has been formally administered in this tragic case.
