The decision was officially announced on Wednesday afternoon by Commerce Secretary Md. Ataur Rahman Khan during a press briefing held at the Secretariat. The announcement came shortly after a high-level meeting between Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir and representatives of major edible oil refining factories in the country, where the final pricing structure was deliberated and settled.

Explaining the rationale behind the adjustment, the Commerce Secretary pointed out that international market prices for raw edible oils have risen steadily alongside domestic transportation and operational expenses. Refiners had initially pushed for a much steeper increase of Tk 10 per litre to offset their mounting expenditure. However, the government mediated a compromise, limiting the hike to Tk 5 per litre. Assuring consumers, the ministry noted that there is no underlying shortage of edible oil in the local market, and the revision was introduced purely as a balanced market adjustment.

The timing of the price revision has sparked widespread discussions regarding household budgeting, arriving closely on the heels of cabinet approval for a new public sector pay structure and recent upward adjustments in sugar prices. When questioned by journalists about whether the rising cost of cooking oil would exacerbate inflationary pressures on ordinary citizens, the Commerce Secretary acknowledged that a minor impact on household expenditure is possible. Nevertheless, he emphasised that the government is actively deploying multiple fiscal and administrative initiatives to keep broader inflation under strict control.
