Sri Lanka Cricket Pledges 300m Rupees for Cyclone Survivors

Cyclone Ditva has wreaked catastrophic damage across Sri Lanka, triggering devastating floods and landslides that have claimed at least 474 lives, while nearly 400 people remain missing. In response to this unprecedented disaster, the Sri Lankan government has launched the Rebuilding Sri Lanka Fund to provide emergency relief and support the recovery of affected communities.

In a significant show of solidarity, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has pledged a contribution of 300 million rupees to the fund. In an official statement released today, the board highlighted its commitment as the nation’s emblematic cricket institution to assist the country in this time of crisis. The contribution, SLC noted, is intended to support government-led emergency relief operations and expedite the restoration of essential public services in disaster-stricken areas.

“The contribution reinforces the government’s ongoing initiatives to rebuild the lives of people severely impacted by Cyclone Ditva,” the board added, emphasising the organisation’s dedication to national welfare beyond the sporting arena.

Sri Lanka’s cricketers have also committed personally, announcing that all proceeds from their upcoming tour of Pakistan will be donated to support flood victims. Sanath Jayasuriya, the national team’s head coach, commented on the crisis, stating:

“The situation in the country is extremely grave. We are profoundly distressed. We are contributing our match fees and all income from the Pakistan tour to assist those affected by the floods. We must confront this difficult time together.”

The SLC’s donation forms part of a broader effort by institutions, athletes, and citizens to address the humanitarian crisis caused by the cyclone. Relief operations are underway in the most affected provinces, with priority given to rescue missions, provision of food and clean water, and the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure.
