Sri Lanka Extends Special Insurance to Disaster-Affected Students

In the aftermath of severe natural disasters that struck various regions of Sri Lanka during November and December this year, the government has announced that affected schoolchildren will be entitled to special insurance benefits. These measures will be implemented under the government-operated Suraksha Sisu insurance programme, which currently provides health and educational protection to approximately four million school students across the country.

The Suraksha Sisu insurance scheme, administered by the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation General, is a fully government-funded, cost-free plan designed to safeguard students against emergencies. Launched in 2017, the programme has recently been enhanced for the 2025–2026 academic year to provide broader coverage. Its primary aim is to protect students from having to abandon their education due to medical emergencies or family crises.

According to government sources, students who have lost a parent or legal guardian due to natural disasters will now be eligible for benefits under this insurance, irrespective of family income levels. However, applicants must submit valid proof verifying the loss.

Significantly, the insurance company has approved medical benefits of up to LKR 20,000 (approximately USD 64.65) per student for treatment, medications, and diagnostic tests resulting from disaster-related incidents. This financial support aims to alleviate the immediate medical costs borne by affected families while ensuring that students can continue their education without interruption.

The table below summarises the key features of the insurance benefits for students impacted by natural disasters:

Experts have emphasised that government-backed insurance initiatives such as Suraksha Sisu play a critical role in providing both physical and psychological security to students affected by natural disasters. The Education Secretary highlighted, “No disaster should interrupt a child’s education, and the Suraksha Sisu insurance ensures that this principle is upheld.”

This initiative not only safeguards the health and educational continuity of students but also eases the financial burden on families affected by calamities. In the coming months, the government plans to offer special assistance to help affected students navigate the insurance claims process, ensuring swift and efficient access to these essential benefits.
