SSC Candidate Killed by Bull Attack

A tragic accident in the Lohagara upazila of Chattogram has claimed the life of a Secondary School Certificate (SSC) candidate after she was gored by a bull on Wednesday morning. The incident occurred at around 11:30 a.m. in front of Padua S.I. Chowdhury Girls’ High School, leaving local residents shocked and grieving.

The deceased student was identified as Saraban Tahura, 15, daughter of Mahfuzur Rahman, a Bangladeshi expatriate currently working in Saudi Arabia. Tahura was a resident of Mallik Sobhan village under Amirabad Union in Lohagara. She was preparing to sit for this year’s SSC examination from the science stream at Padua ACM High School. Teachers and neighbours described her as a diligent and ambitious student with strong academic potential.

According to eyewitness accounts, the accident occurred near the Padua Tewarihat market area. A livestock trader had brought a black bull to the market for sale and tied the animal beside the road. While Tahura was walking past the area on her way to a private coaching session, the bull reportedly broke free from its rope. The animal suddenly charged towards her and struck her forcefully with its horns.

The impact threw the girl onto a nearby pile of bamboo stacked beside the roadside. Witnesses said she sustained severe injuries, particularly to her face and upper body. Bystanders immediately rushed to her aid and transported her to the Lohagara Upazila Health Complex for emergency treatment.

However, doctors later confirmed that she had died before reaching the hospital.

Dr Kishwara Sadia, an emergency department physician at the health complex, told our representative that the girl was brought to the facility around midday but was already deceased. According to the doctor, there were visible signs of serious trauma caused by the horn attack. After the medical examination, the body was handed over to her family members.

The sudden death of the young student has deeply saddened the local community. Residents noted that the area around Tewarihat market often sees livestock tied along busy roadside locations, creating potential risks for pedestrians and students travelling to nearby schools and coaching centres.

Abdul Jalil, Officer-in-Charge of Lohagara Police Station, told our representative that police were dispatched to the scene shortly after the incident was reported. Authorities have begun an investigation to determine whether negligence was involved and whether legal action should be taken against the livestock owner.

Local community leaders have also urged stricter monitoring of roadside livestock trading to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
