Stabbing of police officer during a search in the capital

A police constable was violently attacked while conducting a routine bag inspection in the capital, Dhaka, on Saturday, highlighting growing concerns over the safety of law enforcement personnel during public duties.

The incident occurred in the Kutubkhali area of Jatrabari, when Constable Md. Shah Alam, 33, assigned to the Jatrabari Police Station, was stabbed on the forehead while attempting to search a suspicious bag. The assailant, reportedly one of two young men present at the site, fled the scene immediately after the attack.

According to Constable Nazrul Islam of Jatrabari Police Station, the incident took place around 2:00 PM near the pocket gate check post. “While on duty, Constable Shah Alam was instructed by a police officer to inspect a bag carried by one of two youths who appeared suspicious. During the search, the youth attacked him with a knife and escaped,” he said.

Following the stabbing, Shah Alam was rushed to the Rajarbagh Police Line Hospital in a critical condition. Given the severity of the injury, he was later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for advanced medical care.

Inspector Md. Faruk, in charge of the DMCH police outpost, confirmed that Shah Alam was receiving treatment in the hospital’s emergency department. “His condition is being closely monitored, and we are coordinating with relevant authorities to ensure he receives all necessary medical attention,” he added.

The attack has sparked discussions within the police force regarding the need for enhanced safety measures for officers performing street-level duties, especially during checks in busy urban areas. Authorities have also launched an investigation to identify and apprehend the perpetrator.
