Bangladesh’s meteorological authorities have issued a cautionary forecast for 19 districts, warning of Stormy weather possible with wind speeds reaching up to 60 kilometres per hour by the evening. The advisory, issued for inland river ports, urges heightened vigilance amid expectations of gusty winds, rain, and possible thunderstorms.
According to the forecast released for the period between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, several regions across the country are likely to experience temporary but potentially disruptive weather conditions. The identified include Rangpur, Dinajpur, Rajshahi, Pabna, Bogura, Tangail, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Jashore, Kushtia, Faridpur, Madaripur, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram, and Sylhet.
Meteorologists indicate that winds from the west or north-west may intensify intermittently, producing gusts ranging between 45 and 60 km/h. These conditions are likely to be accompanied by rain or thundershowers, particularly during the afternoon and early evening hours when atmospheric instability tends to peak.
Experts attribute the situation to seasonal convection patterns common in Bangladesh during transitional weather periods. As daytime temperatures rise, warm air accumulates near the surface, later interacting with cooler upper-level air masses. This interaction often triggers short-lived yet intense storms, locally known as nor’westers, which can bring sudden downpours, lightning, and strong winds.
In response, inland river ports across the affected districts have been instructed to display Signal No. 1, a standard cautionary warning. While not indicative of a severe storm, this signal advises river transport operators to remain alert and prepared for adverse conditions. small boat and fishing vessels, in particular, are encouraged to avoid unnecessary and seek shelter where possible.
Below is a summary of the forecast conditions:
| Region Category | Districts Included | Expected Weather | Wind Speed | Wind Direction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Northern Zone | Rangpur, Dinajpur | Rain/Thunderstorms | 45–60 km/h | West/North-West |
| Central Zone | Dhaka, Tangail, Mymensingh | Gusty Winds with Rain | 45–60 km/h | West/North-West |
| Southern Zone | Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali | Squally Weather | 45–60 km/h | West/North-West |
| Eastern Zone | Chattogram, Sylhet, Cumilla | Thunderstorms | 45–60 km/h | West/North-West |
Authorities have also cautioned that such weather may temporarily disrupt river transport, power supply, and outdoor activities. Residents are advised to secure loose objects, avoid open fields during thunderstorms, and remain indoors when winds intensify.
Although the situation is expected to ease after in the evening, forecasters suggest that similar patterns of unstable weather may persist over the coming days. As such, continued monitoring of official updates remains essential for ensuring public safety and minimising risks associated with sudden weather change.
