The Strait of Hormuz, a strategically crucial waterway in the Persian Gulf, became the scene of three separate attacks on cargo ships on Wednesday, 11 March. Each vessel suffered damage from unidentified objects, with one catching fire and forcing an emergency evacuation of most of its crew. The incidents have been confirmed by AFP and the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
Maritime security sources reported that the Thai-flagged bulk carrier “Mayuri Nari” was struck approximately 11 nautical miles north of Oman. A fire broke out in the engine room, prompting an immediate evacuation. UKMTO later confirmed that the blaze has been contained, no significant environmental impact occurred, and a skeleton crew remains on board to maintain essential operations.
The Japanese container ship “One Majesty” was attacked roughly 25 nautical miles northwest of Ras Al Khaimah, UAE. The vessel sustained minor damage, and all crew members are safe. The ship is now proceeding to a secure anchorage.
The Marshall Islands-flagged vessel “Star Guineeth” was targeted about 50 miles northwest of Dubai. Although damaged, Vanguard, a maritime risk management company, confirmed that all crew members are unharmed.
These attacks have escalated concerns over maritime safety in a region that carries nearly 20 per cent of the world’s oil and gas shipments. Since the outbreak of hostilities on 28 February, at least 14 vessels have been attacked, causing a significant decline in commercial shipping along this vital corridor.
Maritime experts warn that continued unrest in the Strait could disrupt global energy supplies and create wider economic implications. Shipping operators are being urged to exercise extreme caution and consider alternative routes where possible.
