In a shocking incident on Saturday afternoon, 17 January, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sakhipur Police Station, Shariatpur’s Bhedarganj Upazila, Mohammad Nazim Uddin Majumdar, was pushed and assaulted by Atikul Islam Somel, a leader of the student political organisation recently declared banned. Somel, the president of Sakhipur Thana’s local student league branch, hails from Sardar Kandi village of Sakhipur Union and is the son of the late Mojibur Sardar. OC Nazim Uddin Majumdar described the incident: “I was conducting a market operation to warn shopkeepers about the sale of loose cooking oil. While on duty, I spotted Somel at one of the shops. Upon noticing us, he attempted to flee. When I asked him to confirm his political identity, he refused and pushed me away before running off. In trying to restrain him, the nail on my little finger was partially dislodged. I have since received medical treatment at the hospital.”
