Renowned actress Suchitra Sen embodied a rare serenity and self-reliance in her life, finding profound peace within solitude. Reflecting on her personal journey, she once remarked, “I have always considered myself a solitary person. I have never sought help from anyone. Acting in Bhagaban Shrikrishna Chaitanya completely transformed my life.”
In this film, she portrayed the character of Vishnupriya, a role that imbued her with a newfound courage and self-assurance. She elaborated, “I have always moved forward guided by my own decisions, not under anyone’s direction. During my leisure, I spend mornings observing the sky, trees, and garden flowers. Evenings are dedicated to the play of light and the colours of sunsets, which bring me immense joy. Conversations with my grandchildren are a special delight.”
One of Sen’s long-cherished ambitions was to play the role of Damini in Rabindranath Tagore’s Chaturanga. Unfortunately, this opportunity never materialised. “Premendra Mitra had planned a film in which I would have played the lead,” she explained. “But the project was cancelled after the producer Hemen Ganguli tragically passed away. I even contemplated portraying Damini on stage, as it remains my favourite among Tagore’s works.”
Her collaborations with Uttam Kumar remain legendary. Films such as Agni Pariksha, Harano Sur, Uttar Falguni, and Saptapadi cemented their on-screen chemistry, while her work alongside Soumitra Chatterjee in Saat Paake Bandha earned her the Best Actress award at the Moscow Film Festival. Recalling her approach to filming, she said, “Scenes often mirrored my real life. During one shoot, I had a disagreement with my husband and tore his shirt that morning. Coincidentally, the same action was required in a scene that evening, so I asked the director if I could enact it naturally—and he agreed.”
Sen was known for her professional integrity and discretion. She would often request that her name appear below Uttam Kumar’s on posters, acknowledging their deep friendship, and she maintained profound respect for Dilip Kumar. Her early career in Mumbai also forged memorable relationships, including acting with Dilip Kumar in Devdas, and guidance from Sanjib Kumar and Kanan Devi enriched both her personal and professional life.
Regarding men, she had a unique perspective: “I value intelligence and expressive clarity over physical beauty.” She declined offers from Raj Kapoor and discontinued collaboration with Satyajit Ray, adhering firmly to her principles.
Throughout her life, Sen sought peace in solitude. “I have always avoided the media, correspondence, and public attention. I even missed my sister Runa’s wedding. The mountains are my favourite travel companions. This way, I remain calm, whole, and entirely myself.”
