Super Typhoon ‘Fung-Wong’ has struck the northern Philippines, resulting in two fatalities. Power outages have been reported across several regions. To manage the situation, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has declared a state of national emergency.
On Sunday (9 November) night local time, the super typhoon made landfall in Aurora province on Luzon Island, with winds reaching 185 km/h. According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), coastal areas were severely damaged by the storm, while central and eastern regions experienced heavy rain and power disruptions.
Numerous villages in Aurora, Isabela, and nearby regions have been flooded. Prior to the storm, at least one million people were moved to evacuation centres. Hundreds of flights were cancelled, and several airports were closed.
Locally, ‘Fung-Wong’ is referred to as ‘Uwan’. The weather bureau predicts that the typhoon will move northwest from Monday, heading towards Taiwan by Tuesday. It is expected to weaken upon reaching western Taiwan by Thursday.
Earlier last week, the Philippines was hit by Typhoon ‘Kalmaegi’, which claimed over 200 lives and left millions homeless.
