Suspected Medical Negligence Death Sparks Violence

A tragic incident in Brahmanbaria’s Nabiganj upazila has led to allegations of medical negligence following the death of a teenage mother after a caesarean section at a private hospital, triggering angry protests and vandalism by relatives.

The incident occurred late on Saturday night (4 April) at Ahmed Private Hospital in the municipal area of Nabiganj. According to eyewitness accounts and family members, the hospital’s doctors, nurses, and staff reportedly fled the premises shortly after the patient’s condition deteriorated, leaving the situation unattended.

The deceased, 18-year-old Raqiba Akhtar, was the wife of Shafiqul Islam from Ward No. 2 of the Laur Fatehpur Union. Her parents have been identified as Mizan Mia and Rehana Akhtar. Family members allege that she died due to complications arising from a caesarean operation conducted under the supervision of Dr Syed Kamruzzaman.

Sequence of Events

Local sources stated that Raqiba was admitted to Ahmed Private Hospital after experiencing labour pains. She was taken into surgery for a C-section, but shortly after the procedure, her condition reportedly worsened significantly. Relatives claim that instead of clearly informing them of the severity of her condition, hospital authorities hurriedly arranged an ambulance to transfer her elsewhere.

However, her mother, Rehana Akhtar, said she became suspicious while the patient was being moved. She stated that upon closer inspection, she realised her daughter was no longer breathing, concluding that she had already died shortly after the operation.

Following the incident, enraged relatives and locals staged a protest on Sunday morning (5 April) at around 10 a.m., during which parts of the hospital were vandalised. Police from Nabiganj Police Station later arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control.

Police and Administrative Response

Sub-Inspector Rajib Kanti Nath (Investigation Officer) of Nabiganj Police Station confirmed that the body had been recovered based on an initial complaint. The remains were sent to the district hospital morgue for post-mortem examination. He added that a full investigation is underway and that appropriate legal action will be taken based on findings.

Authorities have not yet issued any official statement from the hospital management regarding the allegations.
