This performance established him as the leading Indian left-arm bowler in terms of best bowling figures on Test debut.
The previous record was held by former India spinner Dilip Doshi, who took 6 wickets for 103 runs against Australia in Chennai in 1979. Suthar’s achievement ends a 47-year period in which Doshi’s figures remained the benchmark for Indian left-arm bowlers on debut.
However, in the broader context of Test debut bowling performances, Suthar’s figures do not surpass the best overall match figures.
