Two people have tragically lost their lives, and at least twelve others sustained injuries in two separate road accidents on the Sylhet-Tamabil Highway on Tuesday, 16 December. Several of the injured are reported to be in a critical condition.
The first incident occurred at around 9:00 a.m. near Hemu Korichar Bridge in Jaintapur Upazila, when a passenger bus operated by Asia Transport (Dhaka Metro B-14-2847) en route from Dhaka to Jaflong collided head-on with a pickup van that had lost control coming from the opposite direction. The impact caused the bus to crumple, resulting in the death of the bus helper, Jihad (20), a resident of Hajiganj (Part) village, Sadar Upazila, Narayanganj. Around ten other passengers sustained injuries in the accident.
The second accident took place at approximately 12:00 p.m. in front of Haripur 7 Number Kua. According to eyewitness reports, a Toyota HiAce collided head-on with a CNG-run auto-rickshaw. In the chaos, Ansar member Mostofa Mia, who was working at a nearby tea stall, was struck and killed instantly. Two more individuals were seriously injured and were rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Police confirmed that traffic on the highway was temporarily halted immediately following both accidents, but normal flow has since resumed. The Sylhet-Tamabil Highway police and Jaintapur Model Police Station authorities are conducting investigations, and the wrecked vehicles have been recovered from the sites.
The incidents have once again raised concerns regarding road safety on one of Sylhet’s busiest highways, highlighting the urgent need for stricter traffic regulations and vigilance, particularly around heavily trafficked areas such as bridges and commercial spots.
