Tamim Iqbal Eyes Bangladesh Cricket Board Leadership

Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has openly expressed his desire to assume the presidency of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), signalling a potential shift from his playing career to cricket administration.

Tamim had initially planned to contest the latest BCB presidential election. However, citing alleged governmental interference, he ultimately withdrew his candidacy. A significant portion of Dhaka’s club organisers, who were expected to back him, also chose to step aside. Despite this, Tamim recently reiterated his interest in the role during a podcast interview, indicating that the possibility of leading the board remains alive.

Although he announced his retirement ahead of the 2023 One Day International (ODI) World Cup, Tamim briefly returned to play a single ODI. Circumstances prevented him from participating in the World Cup itself. Since retiring from international cricket, he has remained active in the domestic circuit, contributing as a club organiser and mentor, and maintaining strong connections within the cricketing community.

During the SamirSkien Podcast, Tamim was asked directly whether he wished to become BCB president. He replied: “If the opportunity arises, definitely.” When questioned about his suitability, he affirmed confidently: “I believe I am [qualified]. Certainly, I do.”

Tamim explained why he feels ready for administration despite retiring from playing: “My ability as an organiser is clear to everyone in the cricketing circle. Experience and age matter, but intention is paramount. Look at it this way: even the most experienced individuals have run BCB. They’ve been there for 20 years—has it always performed exceptionally? For so long, they relied on seasoned figures; maybe now, it’s time to trust someone like me, less experienced but motivated and committed.”
