In a landmark moment for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Tarique Rahman, the party’s acting chairman, today, Sunday 28 December 2025, officially began operating from the Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan. The building has been serving as the BNP Chairperson’s political headquarters since 2008, following the bail release of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, who had been detained under a military-backed government during the One Eleven political crisis.
According to party sources, the office had been leased at a time when Tarique Rahman was abroad in London for advanced medical treatment. After a 17-year absence, he returned to Bangladesh on Thursday, 25 December 2025, and preparations were made in advance to provide him with a dedicated office within the Gulshan headquarters.
On Sunday, Tarique Rahman convened with members of the party’s National Standing Committee in his new chamber. The acting chairman was warmly welcomed with floral tributes by senior committee members, including:
- Dr Khondkar Mosharraf Hossain
- Mirza Abbas
- Goyeshwar Chandra Roy
- Dr Abdul Moin Khan
- Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury
- Begum Selima Rahman
- Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi
The news of Tarique Rahman’s arrival drew a significant gathering of party supporters and media personnel, who congregated both inside and outside the office. Also present were Dr Moudud Alamgir Pavel, coordinator of the BNP media cell, the chairman’s adviser Mahdi Amin, various officials of the Chairperson’s office, and party leaders from Bogura district. Security arrangements were overseen by Brigadier (Retd.) Shamsul Islam, while Kamal Uddin, coordinator of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation Europe, and the chairman’s private secretary Abdur Rahman Sani were also in attendance.
Tarique Rahman arrived at the Gulshan Avenue office at 1:40 pm, travelling from his residence nearby. After exchanging greetings, he proceeded to his chamber on the first floor. Notably, the Naya Paltan central office also features a separate chamber for the acting chairman, situated adjacent to the chairperson’s office.
This visit marks a historic moment, as Tarique Rahman has returned after a 17-year hiatus, having left Bangladesh in September 2008 with Supreme Court bail to seek medical treatment in London. Government restrictions had previously prevented him from returning alongside his wife Zubaida Rahman and daughter Jaima Rahman. His resumption of office signals a renewed chapter in BNP’s political landscape.
