Tasneem Zara leaves NCP, Announces To Contest Independently

Tasnim Jara, the Senior Joint Secretary of the National Citizens Party (NCP), has formally resigned from her post, marking a significant development in the country’s evolving political landscape. The resignation has been confirmed by another joint secretary of the party. Following her departure, Jara announced that she will contest the upcoming parliamentary election from the Dhaka-9 constituency as an independent candidate, distancing herself from all party affiliations.

In a farewell message shared within the party’s official group, Jara wrote:
“Dear comrades, I have resigned from the party. Over the past year and a half, I have learned a great deal from you all, for which I am sincerely grateful. I wish you every success in the days ahead.”

Shortly afterwards, she took to Facebook to address residents of Khilgaon, Sabujbagh, and Mugda—areas that fall within the Dhaka-9 constituency. In an emotional and personal message, she described herself as a “daughter of the neighbourhood,” noting that she was born and raised in Khilgaon. She explained that her original aspiration was to enter Parliament through a political party platform in order to serve both her constituency and the nation. However, she stated that current political realities had compelled her to step away from contesting under the banner of any party or alliance.

Reaffirming her commitment to political reform, Jara said she remains steadfast in her pledge to fight for a new political culture rooted in integrity, accountability, and public service. “No matter the circumstances, I am determined to honour my promise,” she wrote, confirming her intention to run independently in the forthcoming election.

She also acknowledged the practical disadvantages of running without party backing. Unlike party candidates, she will not have access to a local party office, an organised cadre of activists, or formal channels to raise security and administrative concerns with the authorities. “In this journey, my only strength is you—the people,” she told her supporters, appealing for public trust and goodwill.

Legal Requirements and Signature Drive :

As per electoral law, an independent candidate must submit endorsement signatures from 4,693 registered voters of the Dhaka-9 constituency. Jara announced that the signature collection process would begin immediately, describing it as a daunting task that cannot be completed without widespread public cooperation. She has called upon volunteers to assist with logistics and outreach.

Refund of Campaign Donations :

In a further move underscoring transparency, Jara has pledged to refund all donations received during her earlier campaign fundraising as an NCP-backed candidate. Contributors who donated via mobile financial services have been asked to complete a verification form, after which refunds will be processed. Donors who contributed through bank transfers will be informed separately about the refund procedure.
