Teen Death Fire Mystery Deepens

A tragic house fire in Bakhunda village under Gherda Union of Faridpur Sadar Upazila has sparked intense speculation and public concern after a 16-year-old boy, Tamim Mia, was found dead in circumstances now being treated as highly suspicious by his family.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday (29 March), when a sudden blaze engulfed a residential property in the quiet rural settlement. Upon receiving emergency calls, two units of the Faridpur Fire Service rushed to the scene and managed to bring the fire under control by around 1 a.m., although by then several homes had already been severely damaged.

According to family members and local residents, Tamim had attended a family gathering at a relative’s house earlier that evening before returning home alone and going to sleep. In the middle of the night, a fire reportedly broke out inside the house. The family alleges that as the boy attempted to escape, he discovered the main exit had been locked from the outside, preventing his escape. Neighbours, alerted by his cries for help, eventually broke down the door and rescued him in a critically burnt condition. He was immediately taken to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

Relatives, however, strongly suspect foul play. The victim’s mother, Hamida Begum, and uncle, Shaukat Mia, have claimed that the fire was not accidental but rather a deliberate act linked to an ongoing land dispute. They further stated that the family had previously received threats and had even lodged a general diary (GD) with the local police station. They are now demanding an independent and transparent investigation, insisting that justice be served.

Fire service officials confirmed that three adjoining houses were affected in the blaze, all of which were severely damaged. Preliminary assessments suggest that an electrical short circuit may have triggered the fire, although authorities emphasised that the exact cause remains under investigation.

Police have sent the victim’s body to the morgue at Faridpur Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination. Law enforcement officials stated that all allegations made by the family are being taken seriously and will be thoroughly examined as part of the ongoing inquiry.
