Teen Killed in Zhinigati Crash

A tragic road accident claimed the life of a teenage motorcyclist in Zhinigati, Sherpur, on Friday evening, underscoring continuing concerns about road safety on regional highways. The fatal incident occurred on 30 January along the Sherpur–Rangtia road, in the Ahmednagar area of Zhinigati upazila, when two motorcycles collided head-on.

The deceased was identified as Shanto Mia, aged 17, a resident of the Sadar Goruhati area of Zhinigati Bazar. He was the only son of the late Abdul Kashem. According to police and local witnesses, the collision took place shortly after dusk, a time when visibility often deteriorates and traffic discipline tends to weaken on busy inter-district roads.

Eyewitnesses reported that the two motorcycles were travelling from opposite directions when they crashed into each other with considerable force. Shanto sustained critical injuries and was thrown onto the roadway. Local residents immediately rushed to his assistance and transported him to the Zhinigati Upazila Health Complex. Despite prompt efforts to save his life, the on-duty physician declared him dead upon arrival.

The incident was confirmed by the Second Officer of Zhinigati Police Station, who stated that preliminary findings indicate a head-on collision as the cause of the fatality. Police have visited the scene, recorded statements from witnesses, and initiated the necessary legal procedures. Further inquiries are expected to determine whether excessive speed, lack of protective gear, or poor road conditions contributed to the crash.

The death of Shanto Mia has cast a pall of grief over the local community. Neighbours described him as a quiet and well-mannered teenager with his whole life ahead of him. News of the accident spread quickly, drawing relatives, friends, and local residents to the family home. Community leaders and local representatives also visited to express their condolences and support.

Adding to the tragedy is the family’s painful history with road accidents. Local residents recalled that Shanto’s father, Abdul Kashem, was killed several years ago in a bus accident at the very same Ahmednagar location. For many in the area, the loss of both father and son at the same spot has deepened fears about the safety of this stretch of road and renewed calls for urgent preventive measures.

Road safety advocates note that motorcycle accidents remain a persistent problem in rural and semi-urban Bangladesh, often linked to speeding, failure to wear helmets, narrow roadways, and inadequate traffic enforcement. They argue that improved lighting, stricter monitoring, public awareness campaigns, and better emergency response could significantly reduce fatalities.
