A violent robbery atop a moving train in the Tejgaon area of Dhaka has sparked widespread concern about passenger safety and the persistent dangers of rooftop travel. The incident, which occurred on Thursday night, left two teenage boys seriously injured after they were assaulted and pushed from the train following a robbery.
The victims, identified as Jumman (16) and Toufiq (15), are residents of Belabo in Narsingdi. According to preliminary reports, the boys had boarded a train from Narsingdi Railway Station earlier that evening, intending to travel to the capital in search of work. Due to overcrowding and a lack of available seating—a common issue on busy routes—they climbed onto the roof of the train, a risky but frequent practice in Bangladesh.
Recounting the ordeal, Toufiq stated that as the train approached Tejgaon, a group of approximately four assailants surrounded them. Armed with knives, the attackers threatened the boys and forcibly took control of the situation. The teenagers were then brutally beaten before being robbed of around 700 taka in cash and two mobile phones. In a particularly shocking turn, the assailants subsequently pushed both victims off the moving train.
The fall resulted in severe injuries across multiple parts of their bodies. Passers-by and স্থানীয় residents quickly intervened, rescuing the আহত boys and transporting them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment. Hospital sources confirmed that both victims bear visible चोट marks and remain under close medical observation.
Assistant Sub-Inspector মো. Selim, stationed at the hospital’s police outpost, confirmed that the victims are being treated and that law enforcement authorities have initiated an investigation into the ঘটনায়. Efforts are reportedly underway to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
This incident highlights a longstanding and dangerous reality in Bangladesh’s rail network: the widespread practice of rooftop travel. During peak travel periods—particularly around holidays or times of increased migration to urban centres—passengers often resort to sitting on train roofs due to insufficient capacity. However, this exposes them not only to accidental falls but also to criminal activity, as demonstrated in this case.
Safety experts argue that without stricter enforcement of railway regulations, improved security measures, and public awareness campaigns, such incidents will continue to occur. They emphasise that rooftop travel is not merely unlawful but potentially fatal, especially in densely populated and high-risk transit corridors.
