The BCB could have employed a more cunning strategy

Bangladesh will not be participating in the upcoming T20 World Cup, a decision taken with the safety and dignity of the nation’s cricketers in mind. Former national football captain Aminul Haque has expressed support for the decision but believes that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) could have exercised greater diplomatic skill to secure the team’s participation.

Speaking at an event yesterday, Aminul commented, “The matter concerning Mustafizur Rahman could have been resolved through dialogue with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) or the Indian Premier League authorities. Had that been done, Bangladesh would not have faced a situation where it had to withdraw from the World Cup. In that context, the cricket board has shown a regrettable lack of foresight.”

While Aminul prioritises national honour and player safety above all, he stressed that cricket is deeply intertwined with Bangladesh’s international reputation. “We support any measures that ensure our players’ security and uphold the country’s dignity. But cricket is our heritage, and our national pride on the global stage is linked to it. The board could have been far more strategic in handling this issue,” he said.

Aminul added that proactive discussions with the BCCI and the International Cricket Council (ICC) might have produced a resolution. “By failing to engage in high-level dialogue with the ICC, opportunities to safeguard participation were missed. Our players deserve to compete on the field. Bangladesh has a long history in World Cups, and it is important to examine how oversight and lack of strategic planning prevented our involvement.”

On a separate note, the BCB has initiated steps to reintegrate legendary all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan into the national team. Aminul remarked, “We certainly want a player of Shakib’s calibre to return. However, it must be done within the legal and procedural framework, respecting state protocols. The board cannot act independently in this matter.”

He also criticised former youth and sports adviser Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan for undermining the cricket board. “The adviser’s inexperience and direct interference have caused significant damage to the BCB. Unfortunately, the current president appears to be continuing along the same lines as advised,” Aminul said.
