“The death of Leeds and Wales legend Yorath, aged 75.”

The footballing world is mourning the loss of John “Johnny” Yorath, the celebrated Leeds United and Wales midfielder, who passed away at the age of 75. Yorath, renowned for his elegant passing and leadership on the pitch, leaves behind a remarkable legacy as both a player and a manager.

Yorath began his professional career with Leeds United in 1967 and enjoyed a nine-year spell at Elland Road. In 199 appearances, he scored 11 goals, helping Leeds secure the First Division title in 1974. He also collected runners-up medals in the FA Cup, European Cup, and Cup Winners’ Cup, contributing to one of the most successful eras in the club’s history.

Internationally, Yorath earned 59 caps for Wales, captaining the side on 42 occasions. He later guided the national team to the verge of qualification for the 1994 World Cup, narrowly missing out after a 2-1 defeat to Romania in their final qualifying match.

Yorath also enjoyed spells with Coventry City, Tottenham Hotspur, Vancouver Whitecaps, and Bradford City, before concluding his playing career with a solitary appearance for Swansea City. Notably, he was a player-coach at Bradford on the day of the tragic Valley Parade fire in 1985, which claimed 56 lives and injured over 270 supporters.

Off the pitch, Yorath was a devoted father to four children, including BBC Sport presenter Gabby Logan. In a heartfelt statement, his family said:
“To most he was a revered footballing hero, but to us he was Dad; a quiet, kind and gentle man. Our hearts are broken, but we take comfort knowing he will be reunited with our brother, Daniel.”

Tragically, Yorath’s son Daniel died in 1992 at the age of 15 from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy while playing football at home with his father.

Following his playing days, Yorath embarked on a managerial career, taking charge of Swansea City, Wales, Bradford City, Cardiff City, Lebanon, Sheffield Wednesday, and Margate. He guided Swansea to promotion from the Fourth Division in 1988 and came agonisingly close to leading Wales to their first World Cup finals since 1958.

Former Bradford striker Dean Windass paid tribute on social media, stating:
“Sad news, great man and a gentleman. Thoughts go to his family. RIP.”
