The ICC has warned Pakistan over the consequences of boycotting the match against India

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has issued a stern warning to Pakistan following the government’s sudden announcement that the national team may boycott its Group-stage match against India in the upcoming T20 World Cup. The move, made without citing any specific reason, has raised concerns about the integrity and fairness of the tournament.

In an official statement, the ICC emphasised that such a decision would be contrary to the interests of global cricket. The governing body urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to seek a “mutually acceptable solution” that safeguards the interests of all stakeholders.

The ICC confirmed that, as of now, it has not received any formal communication from the PCB regarding the government’s announcement. “A refusal to participate in a scheduled match undermines the fundamental structure of any international tournament,” the statement said.

The Council added, “The cornerstone of any global sporting event is that all qualified teams compete on equal terms according to the schedule. Selective participation calls into question the principles of fairness, competitiveness, and the integrity of the tournament.”

The India-Pakistan match, slated for 15 February, is widely regarded as one of the most commercially valuable fixtures of the group stage. While the ICC respects the national policy decisions of governments, it noted that unilateral choices jeopardise the interests of cricket fans worldwide.

The governing body also highlighted the potential long-term consequences for Pakistan cricket, urging the PCB to carefully consider the implications. “Pakistan is both a participant and beneficiary of the global cricket ecosystem. Any decision to boycott may have enduring impacts on its international standing and development,” the ICC noted.

Uncertainty over Pakistan’s participation has lingered since Bangladesh was removed from the tournament for security reasons after refusing to play in India. The ICC officially expelled Bangladesh on 24 January, prompting sharp criticism from PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who accused the ICC of applying a double standard in favour of India. Naqvi reiterated that the final decision regarding Pakistan’s participation would rest with the government.

For context, the 2026 T20 World Cup is jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Pakistan is in Group A alongside India, the Netherlands, Namibia, and the United States. The team is scheduled to play all other matches in Sri Lanka, beginning with the Netherlands on 7 February, followed by the United States on 10 February and Namibia on 18 February.

Should Pakistan boycott the India match, it will automatically forfeit the two points allocated for a win and adversely affect its net run rate. According to ICC regulations, a team that does not participate in a match will have its net run rate calculated over the full 20 overs, while the opponent’s net run rate remains unaffected.
