Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman, who was slated to represent Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, has been instructed to be withdrawn from the squad by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
KKR, owned by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, had secured Mustafizur in the IPL auction for a record-breaking sum of ₹9.2 crore, making him the most expensive Bangladeshi cricketer in IPL history. However, escalating diplomatic tensions between India and Bangladesh have prompted the BCCI to intervene, asking the franchise to replace him with an alternative player.
BCCI Secretary Debasish Saikia confirmed the directive, citing growing political and public scrutiny surrounding Mustafizur’s participation. Initially, the board had adopted a “wait and observe” approach, but recent developments compelled a decisive course of action. Speaking to Asian News International (ANI), Saikia stated:
“Due to the recent events, the BCCI has instructed the KKR franchise to release one of their players, Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman, from the squad. If KKR wishes to recruit a replacement, the board will permit a substitution.”
Mustafizur’s selection had already sparked controversy prior to the BCCI’s intervention. A leader of the Uttar Pradesh BJP labelled Shah Rukh Khan “anti-national” for recruiting the bowler. Several self-styled spiritual leaders in India also criticised the actor over the decision, highlighting the intersection of sports and politics in the region.
The KKR franchise had acquired Mustafizur during the December 2025 auction, outbidding several teams for his services. His record ₹9.2 crore fee underscored the growing reputation and market value of Bangladeshi cricketers in the IPL.
