The Mystery of The Serial Killer in Savar has Been Unraveled

The tranquil community of Savar has been shaken by the revelation of a series of brutal killings perpetrated by a local man, raising serious concerns over public safety. Authorities confirmed on 20 January that 28-year-old Shobuz Sheikh, also known by the alias “Samrat,” has been arrested in connection with multiple murders targeting homeless women and childless females.

According to police and court sources, Sheikh lured victims to secluded locations, where he committed acts of sexual assault before killing them. The investigation, led by the Savar Police Circle, is ongoing, with authorities meticulously verifying his confessions.

Additional details about the accused have emerged from preliminary enquiries. Sheikh is the second child among seven siblings—three brothers and four sisters. His father, Panna Sheikh, and eldest sister, Sharmin, currently reside in Barisal, though Sheikh was born in Mosamanda village, Holudia Union, Louhajang Upazila, Munshiganj District.

During initial questioning, Sheikh reportedly admitted that he specifically targeted childless or vulnerable women who were allegedly involved with other men. In one particularly gruesome instance, he allegedly took a young woman, identified as Tania (real name Sonia), to the municipal community centre. Sheikh claimed he first killed the man associated with her and then murdered the woman, subsequently setting both bodies on fire.

Sheikh appeared before court on Monday, confessing to six murders over the past seven months. The Dhaka Chief Judicial Magistrate accepted his confession and, under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, ordered his detention pending further investigation.

Authorities have traced Sheikh’s movements across multiple locations in Savar, including the model police station, Upazila Health Complex, sub-registry office, municipal community centre, and Pakijar More. He reportedly used multiple aliases, such as “King Samrat” and “Mosharur Rahman Khan Samrat,” though no legal documentation exists for these identities.

Savar Model Police Station officer VC Arman Ali stated, “The accused displays highly abnormal behaviour, and the investigation is being conducted with utmost priority.”

The following table summarises the six killings Sheikh has confessed to:
