The new United States Ambassador has arrived in Dhaka ahead of the elections

Ahead of Bangladesh’s forthcoming national elections, the newly appointed United States Ambassador, Brent Christensen, is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka on 12 January. Upon arrival, he will formally present his credentials to the President of Bangladesh, marking the official commencement of his diplomatic mission in the country.

Sources indicate that one of Ambassador Christensen’s immediate priorities will be engaging with leaders of all major political parties. His aim will be to promote a transparent, impartial, and participatory electoral process, ensuring that the upcoming elections reflect the will of the Bangladeshi people. In addition to electoral diplomacy, he is expected to focus on several other critical areas, including human rights protection, addressing the Rohingya crisis, and strengthening bilateral trade and economic cooperation between the United States and Bangladesh.

In preparation for his posting, a three-member delegation from the US Embassy in Dhaka met on 6 January with Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The meeting reportedly covered detailed discussions on Ambassador Christensen’s arrival and the priorities of his mission.

Ambassador Christensen brings extensive experience to his role. A senior officer of the US Foreign Service, he previously served as the Political and Economic Counsellor at the US Embassy in Dhaka from 2019 to 2021. His prior tenure in Bangladesh has afforded him valuable familiarity with the country’s political landscape, as well as established relationships with key political leaders—advantages that are likely to facilitate his diplomatic efforts on the ground.

Analysts suggest that his appointment at this politically sensitive juncture reflects the United States’ interest in supporting stable democratic processes in Bangladesh, while also advancing broader strategic objectives in the region. Observers will be closely watching how his engagement with political stakeholders influences both the conduct and perception of the upcoming elections.
