Today, Muslims across the nation observe the sacred night of Lailat al-Miraj, also known as Shab-e-Miraj, one of the most significant events in Islamic history. Devout followers commemorate this night through worship, prayer, and reflection, seeking the mercy and forgiveness of Almighty Allah.
Shab-e-Miraj marks a pivotal moment in the life of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), during which the five daily prayers, or Salah, were enjoined upon the Muslim community. According to Islamic tradition, it was on this night that the Prophet received divine instruction from Allah to establish the daily five prayers as obligatory for all believers, a command that remains central to Islamic practice today.
Historically, the event took place in the tenth year of Prophethood, corresponding to 621 CE. The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) embarked on a miraculous night journey known as the Isra, travelling from the Kaaba in Mecca to the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. At Al-Aqsa, he led previous prophets in congregational prayer, a moment commemorated in the Qur’an as a sign of divine favour and continuity of prophethood.
Following the Isra, the Prophet ascended to the heavens on a celestial steed known as Buraq, accompanied by the angel Jibril (Gabriel, peace be upon him). This heavenly journey, referred to as the Miraj, took him through the various levels of Paradise, including the Sidrat al-Muntaha—the Lote Tree at the utmost boundary of creation—rivers of Paradise, the dwellings of angels, and the revered Bayt al-Ma‘mur, a celestial house of worship. In this exalted journey, the Prophet was granted a rare glimpse of the Divine Presence, an experience that continues to inspire awe among Muslims worldwide.
On this blessed night, believers engage in Qur’an recitation, dhikr (remembrance of Allah), voluntary prayers, and heartfelt supplications both at mosques and in their homes. Communities and religious institutions often hold special congregations to mark this sacred occasion, emphasising spiritual reflection, devotion, and gratitude.
