The Silenced Melody: Remembering Artist Papia Sarwar

“Naai Telephone, Naire Pion, Naire Telegram”—the voice that made this song unforgettable is remembered today. Artist Papia Sarwar, who carved a unique place in Bangladesh’s cultural sphere through silent dedication, deep commitment and pure melodic grace, was a serene presence in Rabindra Sangeet and a beloved figure in modern songs as well.

Born on 21 November 1952 in greater Barishal, Papia Sarwar’s musical journey began in childhood. Her natural attraction to Rabindranath led her to Chhayanaut while she was still in Class Six. Later she joined Bulbul Lalitakala Academy, marking the beginning of her captivating artistic path.

In 1967, she became a listed artist of radio and television and began performing regularly. After independence, she became the first artist of the new nation to receive a scholarship from the Government of India and pursued higher studies in Rabindra Sangeet at Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, in 1973—a pivotal chapter in her artistic life.

Her eternal identity in song

Although she was deeply devoted to Rabindra Sangeet, one song made her instantly recognisable across the country—
“Naai Telephone Naire Pion Naire Telegram.”
The simplicity, tenderness and pure emotional flow in her rendition still move listeners today.

Education, training and inspiration

Papia Sarwar trained in Rabindra Sangeet under some of the brightest names in Bengali music—
Atiqul Islam, Wahidul Haque, Dr Sanjida Khatun and Jahedur Rahim.
She completed her formal musical training at Chhayanaut in 1966, giving her artistic sensibilities a firm foundation.

Alongside music, she studied zoology at the University of Dhaka. In her personal life, she shared a happy marriage with Sarwar Alam. Their two daughters—
Zara (Professor, College of New Jersey) and Jisha (Ministry of Finance, Canada)—are accomplished in their own fields.

Honours, recognition and artistic legacy

For her outstanding contribution to Rabindra Sangeet, Papia Sarwar received numerous accolades at home and abroad. Bangla Academy honoured her with the Rabindra Award and an honorary fellowship—further elevating the prestige of her artistic achievements.

Final farewell—an irreplaceable loss

After prolonged medical treatment, the gentle light of her sacred voice faded at dawn on 12 December 2024. This devoted and insightful artist of Rabindra Sangeet has departed for eternal peace, leaving behind countless memories, melodies, affection and an everlasting artistic legacy.
