Real Madrid have booked their place in the Spanish Super Cup final after defeating Atlético Madrid 2–1 in a gripping semi-final clash held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Thursday night (8 January). Under the guidance of manager Xabi Alonso, Los Blancos displayed dominance from the very first whistle, asserting their intent to reach the final.
The opening goal came almost immediately. Following a foul on Jude Bellingham, Real were awarded a free-kick, from which Federico Valverde delivered a stunning strike from approximately 25 yards. The Uruguayan midfielder’s powerful effort beat Atlético’s goalkeeper, setting the tone for the match.
Atlético responded aggressively after conceding, creating numerous opportunities. However, Real’s goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was in exceptional form, thwarting several clear chances, including efforts from Alex Berenguer and Alexander Sørloth.
In the 55th minute, Real Madrid doubled their advantage. Receiving a precise pass from Valverde, Rodrigo made a brilliant solo effort, cutting inside from the right and finding the net with a clinical finish. Just three minutes later, Atlético halved the deficit through Sørloth, who headed in a cross from Julian Simón. Despite several subsequent attacks, Diego Simeone’s side could not breach Courtois’s steadfast defence again.
Late in the match, Alonso introduced Arda Güler for Vinícius Júnior, extending the Brazilian’s goal drought to 16 consecutive games. Tensions flared on the touchline during the substitution, resulting in a yellow card for Atlético coach Simeone.
Despite Real’s victory, Atlético statistically dominated possession with 55% of the ball and generated 22 shots, six on target. Real, by contrast, managed eight attempts, four of which were on target.
The win marks Real Madrid’s second consecutive triumph of the new year and offers a measure of revenge for their 5–2 La Liga defeat to Atlético in September.
On Sunday, the stage will be set for the ultimate showdown as Real Madrid face their eternal rivals and current champions, Barcelona, at the same venue. Barcelona secured their place in the final with a resounding 5–0 victory over Athletic Bilbao in the other semi-final. This will be the fourth consecutive Spanish Super Cup final featuring the iconic El Clásico clash between Real Madrid and Barcelona.
