The teenagers were playing near the python and were later rescued safely

Chunati, Lohagara — A dramatic encounter unfolded recently in the Chunati area of Lohagara Upazila, Chittagong, when a large python unexpectedly slithered into a local neighbourhood, capturing the attention of a group of adventurous teenagers. The young onlookers initially attempted to engage with the snake, managing to corner it and even treat it as a sort of impromptu plaything. The situation escalated rapidly when a nearby military vehicle drove past, startling the teenagers and prompting them to release the python.

Fortunately, the swift response of local authorities ensured that the serpent was safely recovered. Members of the Bangladesh Army, in collaboration with the Forest Department, took charge of the python and subsequently transferred it to the Chunati Wildlife Sanctuary.

Chunati Wildlife Sanctuary’s Beat Officer, Chanchal Kumar Tarafdar, told Prothom Alo that the python was in good health and showed no signs of injury. Measuring approximately 4.5 feet in length, the snake had likely entered the residential area in search of food. “Its reintroduction into the sanctuary allows it to return to its natural habitat while also reducing the risk of human-wildlife conflict,” he explained.

Authorities emphasised that although the python’s behaviour was not aggressive, its presence could pose a danger to young children due to its size. Local residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report any similar incidents promptly.

Chanchal Kumar Tarafdar further remarked, “Preventing conflict between humans and wildlife requires ongoing awareness. We are relieved that the python was safely returned to the forest, and this incident underscores the importance of coordinated efforts between the community, the army, and the Forest Department.”

The successful rescue and release highlight both the risks and responsibilities associated with human-wildlife interactions in rural areas. It also reassures the local population that, with timely intervention, such situations can be managed without harm to either people or animals.
