Cyclone ‘Ditwah’ Forms in the Bay; Stable Temperatures Forecasted

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has announced that day and night temperatures across the country are expected to remain largely unchanged over the next 24 hours. According to the forecast released on Saturday (18 December) morning, the weather is projected to remain dry nationwide, with temporarily partly cloudy skies. Although the winter season is progressing, no significant fluctuation in the mercury is anticipated until Sunday morning.

The meteorological office highlighted that Cyclone ‘Ditwah’, currently situated over the Sri Lanka coast and the adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal, moved in a north-north-westerly direction and maintained its position as of 6:00 am on Saturday. The storm is predicted to advance further along this trajectory. While the current path of the cyclone does not pose an immediate threat to the Bangladeshi coastline, maritime ports have been advised to stay alert. Fishing boats and trawlers operating in the North Bay and deep sea have been cautioned to navigate with care as the system evolves.

Furthermore, an extension of the subcontinental high-pressure ridge is currently situated over West Bengal and nearby regions. This atmospheric condition is likely to enhance the sensation of cold in the northern and north-western parts of Bangladesh. Light to moderate fog is expected to develop over river basins and northern districts during the early hours of the morning. Experts suggest that depending on the cyclone’s movements and the position of the high-pressure ridge, temperatures might drop more sharply next week. Farmers are advised to take necessary precautions for their crops during this dry spell.
