Sheikh Hasina’s Trial Becoming a Major International Political Issue: Rony

Former Member of Parliament and political analyst Golam Mawla Rony has said that the growing interest of the international community in the trial of Sheikh Hasina, combined with the increasingly complex political situation in Bangladesh, clearly indicates that the issue will not stop here but will extend much further.

He made these remarks recently on his YouTube channel while analysing the current political developments. Rony stated that Sheikh Hasina is currently staying in India as a “royal guest,” where she is enjoying special security arrangements, freedom of movement and unrestricted political engagement. From Delhi, she has been speaking regularly to international media outlets and maintaining open communication with senior party leaders.

According to Rony, a separate secretariat has effectively been established for Sheikh Hasina, staffed by experienced officials who understand international politics and diplomacy. He suggested that her international positioning and media engagement are being coordinated through this dedicated structure.

Rony said that many significant verdicts and trials have taken place in independent Bangladesh, but no case has attracted international attention on the scale of Sheikh Hasina’s. Referring to the war crimes tribunals, he noted that those trials were discussed globally for a long time due to their lengthy and open proceedings. However, he argued that Sheikh Hasina’s trial is receiving even broader and deeper international focus.

He further said that the level of discussion surrounding Sheikh Hasina in international media over the past 15 days is unprecedented in recent history for any Bangladeshi political leader. While global media outlets may sometimes operate on financial incentives, Rony asserted that such extensive and influential coverage cannot be achieved through money alone. He added that Jamaat-e-Islami and the BNP had failed in the past to draw sustained attention from global media.

Rony pointed out that within just 14 months of losing power, Sheikh Hasina and Sajeeb Wazed Joy have emerged as central figures in international discussions. Citing Al Jazeera and the BBC, he said that although these outlets were previously critical of Sheikh Hasina, they are now airing her interviews.

According to Rony, this suggests either that Sheikh Hasina has managed to influence international media through her personal capacity, political strategy and party efficiency, or that the global community now views Bangladesh and Sheikh Hasina as strategically indispensable to each other.
