In anticipation of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the prestigious FIFA World Cup Trophy made a triumphant return to South Korea on Friday as part of the Coca-Cola–organised FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour. This marks the trophy’s fifth visit to Korea since its inaugural tour in 2006.
The trophy was unveiled at a press event held at CGV Yongsan I’Park Mall in central Seoul, attended by South Korean football luminaries Cha Bum-kun, Cha Du-ri, Lee Young-pyo, and Koo Ja-cheol, alongside former Brazilian international Gilberto Silva.
Cha Bum-kun, who represented South Korea at the 1986 Mexico World Cup, reflected on the moment:
“Seeing the trophy is a mixture of emotions. It is something everyone dreams of, yet few ever hold. But it gives hope. Korea first competed in the World Cup in 1954 in Switzerland, and in 2002, my children’s generation reached the semi-finals. Another generation has passed, and I believe one day we will lift this trophy ourselves.”
Lee Young-pyo also reminisced about Korea’s 2002 semi-final run, expressing similar pride and optimism.
Gilberto Silva, a member of Brazil’s victorious 2002 World Cup squad, described the visit as special:
“The 2002 World Cup was a defining moment in my career. Being in Korea again is meaningful because I can reunite with Lee and Cha Du-ri, whom I hold in great respect.”
Looking ahead to the 2026 tournament, Silva added:
“I am most excited to witness a potential Brazil versus Korea final. Korean football has immense potential, and it promises to be a match that will capture the world’s attention.”
The FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour commenced on 3 January in Saudi Arabia and will visit 75 cities across 30 FIFA member countries. The team that emerges victorious at the 2026 World Cup will ultimately lift this iconic trophy.
A public exhibition will take place on Saturday at CGV Yongsan I’Park Mall, allowing fans an up-close view of the trophy.
