More than 200 leaders and activists formerly associated with the National Citizen Party (NCP) officially joined the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Friday, marking a significant political development in the Savar area on the outskirts of the capital.
The formal joining ceremony took place at Bank Colony in Savar, where the group, led by Sejuti Hossain, former convener of the Dhaka North District NCP Youth Wing, publicly announced their decision to align themselves with the BNP.
The event was attended by Dhaka-19 Member of Parliament Dr Dewan Mohammad Salauddin Babu as the chief guest. During the programme, Sejuti Hossain presented him with a bouquet of flowers before formally declaring her and her supporters’ decision to join the BNP. Senior party leaders and activists welcomed the newcomers with floral greetings.
Explaining her decision, Sejuti Hossain said the move was driven by the country’s current political realities and her confidence in the BNP’s ideology, political programmes and commitment to democratic politics.
“I have chosen to join the BNP because I believe in its political ideals and democratic values,” she said. “My goal is to strengthen the movement to secure the rights of the people while contributing to the party’s organisational development.”
She also pledged to work actively at the grassroots level in accordance with the party’s directives and to help reinforce its organisational structure.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Salauddin Babu welcomed the new members, describing the BNP as one of Bangladesh’s largest political parties and reiterating that its doors remain open to those who believe in democratic values.
He said the party was prepared to welcome everyone who shared its political ideals, including participants in the July movement and individuals committed to working for the welfare of the people.
“The BNP values dedicated, capable and committed leadership,” he said. “Strengthening the party’s organisational structure requires unity, discipline and active participation at every level. We expect our leaders and activists to work closely with the people and fulfil their expectations.”
Dr Babu also emphasised the importance of expanding the party’s grassroots presence and called on both existing and newly joined members to work together to strengthen the organisation ahead of future political challenges.
The ceremony was attended by several senior BNP leaders, including former Savar Upazila Vice-Chairman Dewan Moin Uddin Biplob, Savar Municipality BNP General Secretary Badiuzzaman Badi, Dhaka North District Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal President Tamiz Uddin, Savar Thana Chhatra Dal President Mashfi Ahmed and leaders and activists from various BNP organisational units.
Following the formal induction, party leaders extended floral greetings to the new members and reaffirmed their commitment to expanding and consolidating the BNP’s organisational network across the region.
The development comes amid continued political realignments in Bangladesh, where leaders and activists from different political organisations have recently shifted their allegiance to larger parties. Such movements are often viewed as indicators of changing political dynamics at the local level, particularly in strategically important areas such as Savar and Ashulia.
Political analysts believe the latest defection of more than 200 NCP leaders and activists could influence the local political landscape by strengthening the BNP’s organisational base in the region. While the long-term impact remains to be seen, the development is expected to add a new dimension to political competition in the Savar-Ashulia area as parties continue efforts to expand their grassroots support.
