Threat to NCP Leader Sparks Election Tension

A senior leader of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP), Zainal Abedin Shishir, has reportedly received a direct death threat, igniting significant concern within political circles just weeks ahead of the national elections. The incident has raised alarms over the potential escalation of political violence in the country.

According to Shishir, the threats were delivered via WhatsApp messages sent from an untraceable foreign number. The messages contained explicit details of an alleged plan to assassinate him, stating that he would be shot before the upcoming elections and that no individual or institution could intervene to protect him. The messages even claimed that his body would be left in public view, a claim that has intensified fears of politically motivated violence.

Shishir publicly revealed the threats on Monday, 2 February, through a verified Facebook post. He described the language of the messages as “direct, prolonged, and profoundly alarming,” underscoring the severity of the situation.

The purported sender, who identified himself as “Hossain Zahid,” not only sought to intimidate Shishir online but also implied surveillance and potential offline contact. In his Facebook post, Shishir questioned whether he might fall victim to political violence in the same manner as other leaders, highlighting the broader risks facing political figures in the current climate.

Shishir characterised the threats as part of a wider ideological and political struggle. “My firm stance against injustice and authoritarian tendencies has made me a target,” he said. “Fear will not silence me; political resistance demands courage and, when necessary, personal sacrifice.”

Political analysts have interpreted the threats not merely as an attack on an individual but as a direct challenge to the democratic process and the integrity of the electoral environment. Human rights activists and civil society members have called for an immediate investigation and urged law enforcement agencies to hold the responsible parties accountable under the law.
