The casting journey of Aditya Dhar’s blockbuster Dhurrandhar and its sequel Dhurrandhar: The Revenge has become a subject of intrigue ever since the films’ releases. Recently, casting director Mukesh Chhabra opened up about the meticulous and often surprising process behind assembling the star-studded ensemble.
In a detailed interview, Chhabra revealed that the casting posed significant challenges. “Listening to the screenplay for nearly four hours left me so astonished that I could hardly move for a while,” he said. Across both films, more than 400 artists were considered, necessitating the creation of dedicated teams for auditions and selections.
Key Casting Decisions
From the outset, the lead role of Hamza had only one choice: Ranbir Singh. According to Chhabra, upon hearing the story, Ranbir immediately accepted the role, demonstrating his enthusiasm for the project.
However, the pivotal role of the antagonist, Rahman the Bandit, did not initially attract Akshay Khanna. Chhabra explained that several actors were offered the role first, but they declined, reluctant to portray a villain in what was widely perceived as Ranbir Singh’s film. “Many felt overshadowed by the lead and preferred not to play a negative character,” Chhabra added. Eventually, Akshay accepted the part, delivering a performance that earned widespread acclaim. In Chhabra’s words, those who had rejected the offer now regret their decision.
Another highly discussed character, Yalina Jamali, was portrayed by Sara Arjun. Remarkably, over a thousand auditions were conducted to find the perfect fit for this role.
Alongside Ranbir and Akshay, the films feature performances by Sanjay Dutt, Madhavan, Arjun Rampal, and Rakesh Bedi, contributing to the ensemble’s dynamic presence.
